Welcome to the official FAQ for the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament (EKFT)! Whether you’re a seasoned local angler or traveling from out of state, this guide aims to address your queries and ensure a smooth and enjoyable tournament experience.

 General Tournament Information

Q: What is the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament (EKFT)?
EKFT is a premier offshore kayak fishing tournament series based in Pompano Beach, Florida. It brings together kayak anglers from around the world to compete for substantial prizes while promoting camaraderie and sportsmanship. 


Q: What tournaments are part of the EKFT series?
The EKFT series includes:

  • Summer Slam: Held in June and August.
  • Sailfish Smackdown: Typically scheduled in January.
  • Exotic Bass Roundup: A freshwater event featuring exotic species in April. 

Q: Where are the tournaments held?
Tournaments are based in Pompano Beach, and Delray Beach, Florida, with specific launch points and venues detailed in the respective tournament sections on our website.

 Registration & Participation

Q: How can I register for a tournament?
Registration details, including forms and fees, are available on our website under the specific tournament sections. Early registration is recommended as spots may be limited.

Q: Payment information: 
We advice you use a laptop Computer to make payments as we have had issues with participants using Androids.


Q: Are there any eligibility requirements?
Participants must be at least 18 years old or have parental consent if younger. All anglers must sign a waiver and adhere to tournament rules and safety regulations. 


Q: What is included in the registration fee?
The fee typically covers tournament entry, a goody bag, event t-shirt, and access to the kick-off party. Specific inclusions may vary per event. 

 Tournament Rules & Regulations

Q: What fishing methods are permitted?
Only rod and reel fishing is allowed. The use of electric reels, long-lining, or assistance from boats is prohibited unless specified. 


Q: Are there restrictions on kayak types?
Yes, kayaks must be human-powered. Motors of any kind are not permitted. 


Q: What safety equipment is mandatory?
Each angler must have:

  • A Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  • A sound-producing device (e.g., whistle)
  • Visual distress signals (e.g., flag) 

Q: How is the winner determined?
In the Summer Slam and Exotic Bass Rudup, the angler with the highest total weight of eligible fish wins. For the Sailfish Smackdown, it’s based on the number and timing of sailfish catches. 

 Eligible Species & Weigh-In

Q: Which fish species are eligible for weigh-in for the Summer Slam?
Eligible species include Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi), Wahoo, Kingfish, Blackfin Tuna, African Pompano, Cobia, Mutton Snapper, Gag Grouper, Black Grouper, Warsaw Grouper, Snowy Grouper, and all Mackerel. All fish must weigh at least 5 lbs to qualify. 


Q: What is the maximum number of fish I can weigh in for the Summer Slam?
Up to five (5) fish per kayak are eligible for weigh-in. 


Q: Are there any species-specific limits?
Yes, for example, only two (2) Kingfish per kayak are allowed, each with a minimum fork length of 24 inches. Blackfin Tuna has a recreational bag limit of two fish per person or 10 fish per vessel, whichever is greater. 

 For Out-of-State Anglers

Q: Do I need a Florida fishing license?
Yes, all anglers must possess a valid Florida Saltwater Fishing License. Licenses can be obtained online through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) website. 


Q: Where can I rent or purchase kayak fishing gear locally?
Nautical Ventures, a sponsor of EKFT, offers kayak sales and rentals. It’s advisable to contact them in advance to ensure availability. 


Q: Are there accommodations near the tournament venue?
Pompano Beach offers a range of accommodations, from hotels to vacation rentals. Booking early is recommended, especially during tournament weekends. For Pompano Beach events, Oceans Beach Resort offers special rates for EKFT participants contact Jean at  561-704-2930 and mention Extreme for a discount. Q: What should I expect in terms of weather and sea conditions?
Florida’s weather can be unpredictable. It’s essential to check forecasts regularly and be prepared for varying conditions. Safety is paramount; if conditions are deemed unsafe, the tournament may be postponed or canceled.
